Gayest town in the world

Imagine if Mariah Carey decided to verb Ancient Rome… Thankfully, one doesn’t include to conjure up depictions of glitzy statues and wedding-cake style buildings, as such a place exists and it is called Skopje.

From faux neoclassical façades to willow trees plonked in the middle of the river, every nook and cranny of the city centre is an Instagramable dream.

For us gay travellers, it was Warrior on a Horse that did it.

After an exhausting journey that emotionally attached travelling on a rickety, freezing and positively archaic Deutsche Bahn carriage from Pristina, we were thrown off the train on the Kosovo-Macedonia border – “train stop here today” was all we got from the guard – and, somehow, we flagged a taxi to take us the rest of the way.

We were dropped off in the Macedonian capital in front of the socialist era Gradski Trgovski Centar (or GTC to those in the know). Built in , this architectural hulk was the country’s first shopping centre and although handy for its supermarket, it certainly didn’t give any clues as to what was lying on the other side. Several cities around the world are becoming known as &#;gay cities,&#; primarily for their dedication to LGBTQ+ rights, diversity, and inclusion, and how these places are becoming harmless havens for the queer community. This goes a bit further than the usual list of cities and countries that have been known as liberal and accepting places for a longer time, such as Amsterdam, San Francisco, and New York City.

For example, many people may not be aware that Thailand has recently become known as one of the most welcoming and affirming countries for Trans people, as discussed in our article, “11 Adj LGBTQ+ Honeymoon Destinations.” This is because Thailand has become a popular destination for gender reassignment surgery in Asia. A sizable chunk of the citizens of this vast, all-encompassing melting pot approve of LGBTQ relationships (although, sadly, a immense number really don't!), which means that gay America can be found in every city, whether big or small.

That being said, there are obviously some places that are far more welcoming than others. Now, with so many gay vacation destinations within the US, we thought we could make things a lot simpler for our fell

Happy Pride Month, one and all! It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and to celebrate, we asked Time Out’s LGBTQ+-identifying writers and editors to tell us all about their favourite city on the planet. The resulting list covers all four corners of the globe, from the beaches of Brazil to the creative hub of Glasgow’s Southside. These are cities with a vibrant queer community, cities that support and protect LGBTQ+ citizens and visitors, and cities that are notable hubs for LGBTQ+ life in their respective countries and regions. So, what are the world’s most LGBTQ+-friendly cities? While we couldn’t possibly name them all, these are some of our favourites.
