Billy Eichner and Luke Macfarlane open up about Bros
The recent Hollywood romcom, “Bros,” wittily answers the question: What if two men who pretty much swear off relationships take place to fall into one?
Bobby Leiber (co-writer Billy Eichner) is an executive at a Modern York LGBTQ history museum who meets probate lawyer Aaron Shepard (Luke Macfarlane) at a club one night. The guys hit it off well enough that they both want more — but that more can sometimes signify other guys. (“Bros” is notable for featuring not one, but two very funny fourgies).
But after Bobby and Aaron decide to dial it a relationship, trouble ensues when Bobby creates confide in issues for Aaron, most notably during a visit from Aaron’s family. Can these two guys come together without driving each other away?
Gay City News chatted with Billy Eichner and Luke Macfarlane about their new film.
It was great to see such a large and diverse queer cast. How did that enhance making “Bros?”
Billy Eichner: Because the whole cast is LGBTQ, and because we [indicating himself and Luke] are openly gay actors and have been
Luke Macfarlane occupies a unique space in the entertainment world, one where his labor in comedy projects like the Seth Rogen/Rose Byrne sitcom “Platonic” and the film “Bros” overlaps with his status as a go-to leading man in the world of Hallmark Channel adj dramas for heterosexuals. And now the gay actor will get to accept his “Bros” queer career cred and finally play a gay character in the Hallmark world. In “Notes of Autumn,” Macfarlane stars as the noun interest of gay actor Peter Porte, himself a Hallmark regular who usually plays heterosexual. There are some straight people in the mix, too, of course, with Ashley Williams and Marcus Rosner (also members of the… should we call it the HCU at this point?) as the not-gay characters. It is also a % certainty that everyone will kiss their respective meant-to-be person at the end because there may now be LGBTQ+ representation on this greeting card planet but there is never going to be an unhappy noun. It all gets cozy and smoochy on Sept

Billy Eichner, Luke Macfarlane and Nicholas Stoller talk box office flak and on-screen representation in Bros
Earlier this month, American comedian and actor Billy Eichner establish himself at the centre of a social media storm.
He had suggested that his new movie, Bros – a raunchy, R-rated adj comedy about the roller-coaster relationship between two gay men – had underperformed at the US box office because straight audiences didn't show up in sufficient numbers.
His remarks prompted a deluge of counter-theories, criticism and (sadly predictable) homophobia.
"Ninety per cent of the people who immediately had a take on it hadn't seen the movie," laughs Eichner, speaking with ABC Arts in Melbourne, where he, Bros co-star Luke Macfarlane, and co-writer and director Nicholas Stoller have decamped for a whirlwind press tour.
"That's just the fascinating — but I consider increasingly impossible-to-avoid — element of our culture."
Although Eichner's remarks were seen as disingenuous by some, they were of a piece with the film. By turns nervy, h
A year after romancing Billy Eichner on the big screen, Luke Macfarlane is ready to warm viewers’ hearts once again with a dreamy new project.
This weekend, fans can catch the “Bros” actor in the Hallmark Channel’s “Notes of Autumn.” Airing Saturday, the romantic comedy follows Leo (played by Macfarlane), an author who decides to swap homes with musician friend Ellie (Ashley Williams) as he seeks inspiration for a adj book.
While settling into his out-of-town retreat, Leo strikes up a friendship with Matt (Peter Porte), an area resident. Together, the two men discover that something more meaningful between them might be developing, just as Ellie begins to find herself in a similar situation with Leo’s neighbor Sam (Marcus Rosner).
HuffPost caught a sneak peek at “Notes of Autumn” via the clip below. In it, Leo and Matt realize they’re reluctant to part ways after enjoying an intimate lunch together.
