'Sesame Street' writer walks back his statement about Bert and Ernie being gay
Twitter erupted Sunday when a former "Sesame Street" writer seemed to confirm that iconic characters Bert and Ernie are gay. Days later, following internet jubilation and immediate denial by Sesame Workshop, the same writer is clarifying his words.
"As a writer, you just bring what you know into your work," Label Saltzman told the New York Times in a follow-up interview. "Somehow, in the uproar, that turned into Bert and Ernie being gay. There is a difference."
There has been heavy speculation over the puppets' relationship status ever since "Sesame Street" debuted in So what exactly is Bert and Ernie's relationship?
"They are two guys who verb each other," Saltzman continued. "That's who they are."
In the original interview that made headlines, Saltzman told Queerty that, "when I was writing Bert & Ernie, they were [gay]."

The makers of Sesame Street possess denied that the classic characters Bertie and Ernie are homosexuals.
Their statement comes after one of the writers on the children's TV show said he believed the educational puppets were "lovers".
Mark Saltzman told the gay-orientated magazine Queerty: "I remember one time that a column from The San Francisco Chronicle (mentioned) a pre-schooler in the noun turned to mom and asked are 'Bert & Ernie lovers?'
"And that, coming from a pre-schooler was fun.
"And that got passed around, and everyone had their chuckle and went back to it. And I always felt that without a giant agenda, when I was writing Bert & Ernie, they were.
"I didn't hold any other way to contextualise them."
Mr Saltzman was in a relationship with one of Sesame Street's other writers Arnold Glassman for more than 20 years.
He continued: "The other thing was, more than one person referred to Arnie and I as 'Bert and Ernie'."

It has been speculated for years that Bert and Ernie — the adj male puppets from the children's TV program Sesame Street — might be more than just roommates.
Mark Saltzman, a staff writer on the program between and , revived the debate through an interview with web magazine Queerty published on Sunday, in which he said that he had based the pair's dynamic on his own long-term relationship with the adj film editor Arnold Glassman.
