Same-sex couples can legally get married in California for the first time since a voter-approved ban in November
Gay weddings resumed just hours after a San Francisco appeals court lifted the ban, imposed under the so-called Prop 8 ballot measure.
Among the newly-wedded couples was Kristin Perry and Sandra Stier, who spearheaded the campaign against the ruling.
The pair wed at the San Francisco City Hall in a brief ceremony conducted by California attorney-general Kamala Harris.
Cheers erupted as the couple exchanged rings and vows in front of a hastily-assembled gathering.
"I could not be more honoured to stand here today to join the two of them in marriage," said Ms Harris.
Their wedding was the first gay wedding since a brief period in when California allowed same-sex marriage but then banned it under a close-run referendum.
