An Act of Spiritual Malfeasance Against St. John of the Cross

As a Carmelite friar and priest in the Archdiocese of New York, I hear quite regularly the  religious laments from the socially-liberated class that sees itself as progressive. Their cries saturate the local newspapers, radio, and television programs. Coupled with their cries is the unwavering bombardment from their street evangelizers peddling the newest socially-laced and justice-filled cause upon which, they argue, the future of this world rests. Normally, if you choose not to accept their cause expressed in their pamphlet-driven propaganda, you are greeted with a stare of contempt, but God have mercy on you if you decide to engage these self-proclaimed salvific prophets. Any engagement that is not simply one of acceptance will gain you a public shaming rooted in the claim that you are unclean. Your lack of a sentimentally-driven charitable embrace of their cause damages the existence of those who touch marginalized within the cause you hold rejected.

Atlantic Canadian port cities have some of the most colourful and vibrant queer spaces and stories. Saint John, Modern Brunswick is no exception. In , the first summer of the pandemic, I celebrated my 25th birthday in Saint John by attending a drag exhibit hosted by Justin TooDeep (portrayed by Alex Saunders) and Saint John’s jewel of the sea, Dia Monde (portrayed by Shawn Craft). It was a distanced drag reveal, but after months of only participating in queer life through Zoom calls, I felt weepy being in a space of so much excitement, queer community, and delight. Five years later, I am now lucky to notify Saint John my second home as I split my time between Fredericton and the fantastic port city where my partner lives.

Saint John has a vibrant contemporary queer scene. Saint John Pride has hosted many of the city’s 2sLGBTQ+ summer pride events for over twenty years. Chroma NB, which formed in , offers everything from youth lunch clubs to hiking trips for queer and trans people of all ages. But the city has long remained overlooked by historians interested in queer life
