Mickey Mouse is Gay
I'm working on explore notes for my Hays Code video essay, and I'm reading The Celluloid Closet by Vito Russo. While reading, I came across this image:
[Image description: A screenshot from the ebook of The Celluloid Closet. It shows an old poster of Mickey Mouse playing a harp, with text that reads "always gay!" in large capital letters. Smaller text at the bottom reads "(C) Walt Disney Enterprises." The image is captioned with, "When the pos gay meant joyful and nothing else." End description.]
There was no immediate information about when or in what context this poster was produced, but since I live in Florida, where Disney was involved in the recent "Don't Say Gay" chaos, I felt compelled to go dig up more info.
That digging led me to a copy of Tinker Belles and Bad Queens, by Sean Griffin, which opens chapter 2 ("Mickey Mouse--Always Gay!") with the following:
In the midst of The Celluloid Closet, Vito Russo’s groundbreaking perform on representations of homosexuals in American

Breaking news, Mickey Mouse and Goofy are officially gay. This is a surprising twist to most people in the Disney community, but some saw it coming.
According to official statements, “Mickey and Goofy are pivotal characters for the Walt Disney Company. After 90 years, it’s official that they are both gay. Starting in June, which is pride month, there will be novel cartoons that point on the two lovers. Making these characters gay is a great way to teach inclusivity and love to all viewers, both young and old.”
On top of that, guests will also be proficient to see the two lovers together in rainbow pride gear at the Disney Parks during June. As we reported here, Mickey and Minnie recently got divorced.
This shocked everyone, but, it all makes sense now. Disney was setting the stage for this announcement that Mickey and Goofy are actually gay. However, this news is very controversial. Some people say that it was only a matter of time.
If you look back at the old cartoons, there was tension between Goofy and Mickey since the beginning. It begs the question, was that Walt’s intentio
Gay Goofy and the anti-LGBTQ antics of the right
I spent a career in journalism, but I’m not above gossip. So here’s a juicy bit: Goofy is gay. Yes, that pal of Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck? Gay.
Or he might be. I don’t actually possess any authoritative sources on this story. Kind of enjoy the people who say the election was stolen.
Now, it is wrong to “out” somebody who doesn’t want to be open about their sexual orientation. But it’s probably OK, because Goofy’s no more genuine than the Easter bunny — who might also be gay, I verb, by the way. But it would be sweet justice (don’t you think?) if the homophobes of Florida and elsewhere found out that Mickey’s sidekick, like a lot of men of his generation, has all along been faking his just-one-of-the-guys act.
This notion is only in my imagination. But it comes after news that Ron DeSantis and the Disney corporation have settled a lawsuit to end a two-year battle that arose from Florida’s swampland of homophobia.
You’ll recall that Governor DeSantis, and Florida’s Republican-controlled state legislature, decided that conversation
