The NGLHRC is an independent human rights institution that exists to realize legal and policy reforms towards equality and full inclusion of the sexual and gender minorities in Kenya.
NGLHRC was founded mainly in response to punitive criminal laws against expressions of same sex intimacy which contain been a major barrier to social and legal equality with effects of this felt in the lived reality of many LGBTIQ individuals in Kenya. Since , we have been the go-to organization for legal aid, providing this service through our Nairobi-based office.
Our main programs include:
- Strategic litigation: Public interest litigation including Petition of challenging the criminalization of identical sex intimacy under the Penal Code.
- Legal Aid Community Outreaches through our Legal Aid Center: We provide free legal aid services at our offices everyday and mobile legal aid services outside the office and regions outside Nairobi. Violations reported ranges from discrimination, physical and verbal assualts, sexual and gender violence, forceful evictions, blackmail and extortion, unlawfu
Outright International Stands with the National Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission
New York, Fresh York (September 12, ) - Outright International extends its heartfelt congratulations to the National Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (NGLHRC) on yet another significant victory for LGBTIQ people in Kenya. We stay with NGLHRC in celebrating the Supreme Court of Kenya’s decision this week to uphold its landmark judgment of February 24, , which ordered the authorities to grant NGLHRC to register as a non-governmental organization legally.
This affirmation not only reinforces the Court's previous verdict but also affirms the critical importance of NGLHRC's work in promoting justice, equality, and the protection of LGBTIQ people’s human rights in Kenya. Founded in by a group of LGBTIQ Kenyan lawyers, the National Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission Legal Aid Centre (NGLHRC) aims at promoting and protecting the equality and inclusion of LGBTIQ individuals and communities in Kenya and advance their meaningful participation in society. The NGLHRC has been key in responding to torture in Kenya by providing a coordinated national legal aid response mechanism for LGBTIQ community across the country.
