As a closeted gay male, Ian has to explore his budding sexuality in private – something that’s easier said than done, and a consistent source of Ian’s problems.

Kash owns the convenience store where Ian works, but as the husband of a devout Muslim woman, he’s terrified that their affair may come to light. Ian is putting mounting pressure on Kash to come out to his wife, which has started to put a strain on their juvenile, secret relationship.

                  I chose to assess Mickey and Ian’s relationship because it has a tragically beautiful quality to it, and has so many alternative variables involved that I thought it would make for a good analysis. Both Ian and Mickey have many life experiences and struggles that simultaneously make up their intersectionality, and also affect their sentimental relationships.

Actor Cameron Monaghan joined the cast of Shameless in On the show, he plays Ian, the third oldest Gallaghersibling whose struggles to come out as gay was captured on Season 1. 

Cameron's exceptional portrayal of the character has long resonated with fans, many of whom are particularly fond of how the show depicted the evolution of Ian's relationship with Mickey (Noel Fisher).      The American remake of the British sitcom “Shameless,” was first aired in and continues to top International Movie Database’s “Most Popular TV Series” list at number seven as fans await an eighth season to air. The Showtime series, created by Paul Abbot, is about the Gallagher family—six siblings who work together to take care of each other, all-the-while dealing their destructive, alcoholic father. First produced by Michael Hissrich, followed by Terri Murphy, the series includes characters that openly name, or are portrayed, as queer. Although there is no public information regarding Murphy’s personal life, I believe that due to the creator’s and original producers’ positionalities as heterosexual males, the show’s minority characters are portrayed in a negative or stereotypical light (“Shameless,” n.d.).
