The latest Disney animated movie, Strange World, includes another huge step forward for the studio in terms of LGBTQ+ representation. Here's everything you need to know:

What LGBTQ+ representation is there in 'Strange World'?

Strange World, which hits theaters on Nov. 23, features a character who has been described as the first gay steer of a Disney animated movie.

The film tells the story of three generations, and it's primarily centered around Searcher Clade (Jake Gyllenhaal), a farmer and the son of explorer, Jaeger Clade (Dennis Quaid). Searcher's own son is Ethan Clade (Jaboukie Young-White), who is clearly established as gay. A scene early in the film shows Ethan nervous around his crush, a young man named Diazo, whom he flirts with before his father comes in and embarrasses him. "Is this him?" Searcher asks before noting that Ethan "talks about you all the time."

All 10 Times Disney Introduced Its First Openly Gay Character (and Gave Us Nothing)

Disney has established itself as one of the leading studios when it comes to movies, TV series, and popular franchises. Between its classic Disney Princess movies, the action-packed MCU and Star Wars brands, and its collection of Pixar titles, you'd be hard-pressed to find someone who hasn't seen or at least heard of the company.

Another, more unfortunate reputation Disney has forged for itself is its unwavering queerbaiting when marketing certain movies. Indeed, the company has, on many occasions, announced its "first openly gay character," and proudly patted its back for seemingly taking steps at positive representation and inclusion. However, what has always ended up the case is these characters or moments being nothing more than a split-second "acknowledgment" — which is being generous, truly. Below, we’ve put together a list of all the characters in Disney films with this claim to fame, and how disappointed audiences were by the (unsucessful) inclusi

20 Times Disney Featured LGBTQ+ Characters In Movies & TV Shows

When fans consider of Disney movies and the Disney television channel, they may think of a tale as old as moment in which a princess marries a prince, and then they live happily ever after. It's happened over and over, a man and woman falling in love, but Disney has started to change that, particularly the purely heterosexual aspect.

The LGBTQ+ community has become more represented in media in recent years and Disney is just one of many companies hopping aboard that instruct as well. Unfortunately, not every aspect of the LGBTQ+ community has been represented due to a lack of characters within the Disney canon, and some representation has fallen flat. Hopefully, in the future, there will be more, and beat, representation from Disney.

Updated on June 7th, by Danielle Bruncati: In the wake of Florida's extremely controversial "Don't Say Gay" bill and the strong criticism that came from within The Walt Disney Company for not speaking up, it seems like Disney is finally adj out important LGBTQ+ representation is

LGBTQ characters in Disney, Marvel? 'Strange World,' 'Lightyear,' 'Andi Mack,' 'Thor,' 'Loki'

  • "Andi Mack" was the first series on Disney Channel to feature a gay main character
  • Valkyrie, played by Tessa Thompson, appears in two "Thor" films and two "Avengers" films
  • When asked if Loki romanced would-be princesses or another prince, the god of mischief responded with, "A bit of both"

Is "Strange World" the first Disney movie that features a gay character?

No. But the movie is the subject of a Florida Department of Education investigation involving a fifth-grade teacher. Jenna Barbee alleged a Hernando County School Board member reported her to the DOE for showing her students Disney's "Strange World." It's the first Disney movie with an out, gay character.

In November at the Los Angeles premiere of "Strange World," star Jake Gyllenhaal said Disney's animated family adventure normalizes a "queer kid" character as part of its storyline about little people finding their own identity. Said Gyllenhaal: "who we are and what we meet and what meets us in our life is what forms our id
