Audre Lorde
Audre Lorde described herself as a “black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet.” She understood that personal identity encompassed more than one’s gender or race. That it was gender and race. Even more than that, it was gender and race, and sexual orientation, class, age, ability and many other dimensions of identity which intersected to shape a person’s experience. Today, this idea is known as intersectionality, a term coined by Kimberlé Crenshaw.
An accomplished poet, Lorde’s first volume of poetry was published in by the Poet’s Compress. She went on to publish numerous other critically acclaimed works that grappled with the complexities of identity and oppression.
In her book “I Am Your Sister: Black Women Organizing Across Multiple Sexualities,” Lorde wrote, “I am a Jet Feminist. Let’s celebrate Pride Month!
The month of June is ‘Pride Month’ devoted to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer persons (LGBTIQ+). In addition, the European External Action Service has launched the ‘Pride Heroes’ campaign to acknowledge the perform of those who promote the human rights of LGBTIQ+ persons, give visibility to diversity and contribute to a society of tolerance and respect.
The LGBTIQ+ pride promotes self-affirmation, dignity, equality and increased visibility of LGBTIQ+ persons and all others with diverse sexual orientations, gender identities or expressions, and sex characteristics as a social group. A European survey showed that discrimination towards LGBTIQ and others still exists, which is why the European Commission has set up the ‘LGBTIQ Equality Strategy ’, striving to build an environment where all people can be themselves without the uncertainty of discrimination, exclusion or violence.
The strategy sets out key objectives who are built around four pillars to be achieved by

Media coverage of these and other non-LGBTQ focused moments should involve LGBTQ people and the intersections of LGBTQ people and the respective topic.
