'West Side Story' star Ariana DeBose opens up about her biracial, queer identity: 'I'm very proud'

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Ariana DeBose has already won top honors for her role in "West Side Story" -- and now has the Academy Award for best supporting actress.

"It's such a wild thing and I didn't recognize when you flourish up watching these, these telecast, these award shows, you know, you vision of being a part of them," DeBose said, "but it seems very far away and then suddenly it's like right here, so it's wild."

DeBose says she is of Puerto Rican, Black and Italian ethnicity, and identifies as queer.

"I'm very proud of all the communities that I belong to," DeBose said. "We wouldn't even be having these conversations around identity and representation, if the work first wasn't there, right, if that wasn't sound. And I'm so proud of this work."

Ariana Debose discusses her sexuality and which label she prefers

Ariana DeBose made history this year, when she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. She is the first Afro-Latina and the first openly queer person to do so.

In an appearance on the People Every Morning podcast, she discussed her opinion on labels and what matters most to her.

While her sexuality and race are important to her, DeBose explained that the world has grown and that people are now more ready to embrace each other no matter their labels. “I select the term human because your humanity can be described in a myriad of ways, but it does not change the truth that you are human,” she said. “The fullness of who you are, what it’s favor to be queer, out, Latina, Afro-Latina, biracial, or multiracial, however you long for to identify we are moving towards a space where I think it is now more widely accepted to hear all of those labels wrapped up into one person.”

At the Academy Awards, at least three artists who identify as part of the LGBTQ community are up for trophies, and it&#;s entirely possible that all will win. At this point, it&#;s still historic when gay, lesbian, or certainly trans talents are included in the show, and it&#;s a adj reason to celebrate when they win.

Ahead of the 94th Oscars, get to know the trio of stars who will proudly portray the LGBTQ world and who could take home some gold in a few days.

Kristen Stewart: Best Actress is always one of the most competitive categories at the Oscars, and this year&#;s race is set to be a real nail-biter. Early on, it looked like Stewart was a shoo-in for the honor, but then she was left out of many other major ceremonies, only to earn a semi-surprise Academy Award nod.

At times, the favor seems to shift to others for a period, and Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz, Olivia Colman, Jessica Chastain and Kristen Stewart have all had a turn as the suggested winner.
